As the Director of Neurosurgical Laboratories for the NINJ, Dr. Sapru has been a leading researcher in the fields of neurosurgery, neurosciences and pharmacology for many years. His has received continuous funding for his research since 1979 from different agencies including NIH, American Heart Association and Veterans Administration.

His cutting-edge research has led to him serving as an ad hoc reviewer for more than two-dozen scientific journals, he is on the editorial board of American Journal of Physiology and Clinical and Experimental Hypertension. His major research focus includes central (primarily medullary and hypothalamic) control of cardiovascular and respiratory functions; central control of regional vascular flows; cerebral blood flow; cardiovascular functions of locus coeruleus; autonomic function of A5 noradrenergic region; identification of transmitters in different cardiorespiratory reflex mechanisms (baroreceptor, chemoreceptor, and cardiopulmonary reflexes); spinal control of cardiorespiratory function; neural mechanisms in hypertension; major techniques used: neuronal recordings, microiontophoresis, microinjections.

Dr. Sapru has served as a chairman of scientific sessions and has been an invited speaker at more than a dozen national and international symposia and three-dozen seminars. In recognition of his scholarly activities, he was awarded an "Exceptional Merit Award" by NJMS. He is a member of half a dozen professional societies and was recently elected as a "Fellow of Cardiovascular Section" of the American Physiological Society. He has been recognized by numerous national and international granting agencies and is a regular or ad hoc member of different study sections including those of National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association (NJ Affiliate), National Science Foundation (N.S.F.), and Medical Research Council of Canada. Through his research he has published more than 200 articles and abstracts, published 2 textbooks and wrote chapters for 14 others.

Dr. Sapru received MS and PH.D. degrees in Pharmaceutics from Banaras University in India. He joined Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, as a Fulbright scholar and received MS and PH.D. degrees in Neuropharmacology. After completing his education at Columbia University, he was appointed as an instructor in the section of Neurological Surgery (now Dept. of Neurological Surgery) and he rose through the ranks to the current position of Professor. He has joint appointments as a Professor in the Departments of Neurosciences and Pharmacology and Physiology in New Jersey Medical School and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and has served as a visiting professor at many international and national universities including Osaka City University Medical School, University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Kitakyushu, Japan, University of Sao Paulo, Riberao Preto, Brazil, St. George's University School of Medicine, Granada, West Indies, University of Iowa, Cardiovascular Center, and Institute of Cardiovascular Research, University of Houston, Texas.
