Director, Neurosurgical Research Labs

As the Director of Neurosurgical Laboratories for the NINJ, Dr. Sapru has been a leading researcher in the fields of neurosurgery, neurosciences and pharmacology for many years. His has received continuous funding for his research since 1979 from different agencies including NIH, American Heart Association and Veterans Administration.

Dr. Sapru received MS and PH.D. degrees in Pharmaceutics from Banaras University in India. In 1967, he joined Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, as a Fulbright scholar and received MS and PH.D. degrees in Neuropharmacology. After completing his education at Columbia University in 1974, he was appointed as an instructor in the Dept. of Neurological Surgery and he rose through the ranks to the current position of tenured Professor which he has held since 1986. He also has joint appointments as a Professor in the Departments of Neurology and Neurosciences and Pharmacology and Physiology in New Jersey Medical School and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He has served as the Director of Laboratory of Neural Control of Cardiovascular Function since 1978. From time to time, Dr. Sapru has served as a visiting professor at many international and national universities including Osaka City University Medical School, University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Kitakyushu, Japan, University of Sao Paulo, Riberao Preto, Brazil, St. George's University School of Medicine, Granada, West Indies, University of Iowa, Cardiovascular Center, and Institute of Cardiovascular Research, University of Houston, Texas. He has served as a chairman of scientific sessions or has been an invited speaker at more than a dozen national and international symposia. He has been invited as a speaker at about 3 dozen seminars. In recognition of his scholarly activities, he was awarded an "Exceptional Merit Award" in 1984 by NJMS.

He is a member of half a dozen professional societies and was recently elected as a "Fellow of Cardiovascular Section" of the American Physiological Society.  From time to time, different national and international granting agencies have recognized his research expertise and he has been invited to be a regular or ad hoc member of different study sections including those of National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association (NJ Affiliate), National Science Foundation (N.S.F.), and Medical Research Council of Canada. Dr. Sapru has received continuous funding for his research since 1979 from different agencies including NIH, American heart Association and Veterans Administration. Besides serving as an ad hoc reviewer for more than 2 dozen scientific journals, he is on the editorial board of American Journal of Physiology and Clinical and Experimental Hypertension. Dr. Sapru has served as a thesis advisor for several Ph.D. and M.S students. He has published more than 250 papers, books, book chapters, reviews and abstracts.
